The inspiration for new ideas comes from countless sources – nature, historical architecture, and global influences to name just a few. Homes are designed to facilitate day-to-day activities like eating and bathing. Great home design merges function with form, making your home a place of comfort and beauty. The trends found in this publication come from the 2021 CHBA Home Buyer Preference Survey. Powered by Avid Ratings Canada, it is the largest market research study in Canada on new home buyer preferences. The study surveys recent home buyers from across the country. The annual survey just completed its seventh year, allowing us to see trends ebb and flow, changing as the ways that we use our homes adapt and reflect both our shared and unique ways of living. In the following pages you’ll see the many design trends on display in real homes that were entrants, finalists and winners of the CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence, Canada’s premiere awards for new homes, renovations, communities, and residential marketing. These homes are designed and built by members of the Canadian Home Builders’Association. Some of them are custom, and have been tailored to the needs and preferences of a specific family. Others have floor plans that were created with common desires in mind, with enough flexibility to serve many different kinds of households. Every home illustrates the different ways that trends can be interpreted and personalized. Our homes are deeply personal in how we use them and what we choose to surround ourselves with. Be inspired to try new things, or be guided in the principals of home design, but above all, let your home be a place that feels right to you. North Pointe Homes Ltd., Edmonton, Alberta 4 TOP 10 The CHBA Home Buyer Preference Survey asks recent homebuyers for their in-depth thoughts on home design, building features, buying preferences, and demographics. What kind of flooring do Millennials like? How many bedrooms are Boomers really looking for? And for younger buyers who have been able to become homeowners, how important was proximity to public transit or schools? These questions can all be dug into with the full results of the survey. What everyone always wants to know, however, are the top interior features of homes in Canada today. If you’re planning ahead for the resale value of your home, or wondering what renovations will be a good return on investment, these top features may help you make some decisions. Whether you’re an experienced chef, serial entertainer, or simply someone whose go-to appliance is the microwave, the kitchen is often the place where loved ones gather to share meals and good conversation. It’s a popular space in the home where memories are made, from the nostalgia felt by the smell of grandma’s holiday baking to the kids from the soccer team piling in for a quick lunch before the game. Whatever your needs, the design of your kitchen is integral to accommodating you and your family’s lifestyle. So, it’s no wonder that the kitchen remains extremely important to home buyers, as reported by the 2021 CHBA Home Buyer Preference Survey, powered by Avid Ratings. Three kitchen-specific features made the Top 10 list this year: energy- efficient appliances, islands, and an open-concept layout. Builders and renovators across the country have embraced these asks from Canadian home buyers, crafting stunning kitchens in an eclectic range of styles while incorporating an impressive use of creative functionality.
